# Start Your Avatar From Photographs

> Load front and profile photos, review detected points, correct measurements, and apply a first avatar fit.

Use photographs to create a first fitting pass for a built-in avatar, then replace uncertain estimates with tape measurements. Finish by saving the reviewed body for your costume.

## Before you start

Open a costume with a built-in avatar. Save its existing setup with **Avatar → Save As** if you want to keep it. Photo fitting does not support imported body meshes.

Prepare a front photo showing the whole body, head to feet. Stand upright in fitted clothing with arms slightly away from the torso. Keep the camera level at chest height. A second photo in the same pose turned 90 degrees provides a profile for depth estimates. Have your standing height without shoes and tape measurements ready.

## 1. Load and calibrate the photos

1. Choose **Avatar → Edit Avatar** and open the **Avatar** tab.
2. Under **Photo fitting**, click **Fit avatar from photos…**.
3. Under **Front photo**, click **Choose photo…** and open a JPG, JPEG, PNG, or WebP.
4. Add a **Side photo** if available. Use a true profile, not another front view.
5. Enter **Standing height**, choose **cm** or **in**, and click **Analyze photo**.

**Check:** The dialog reaches **Refine fit** with body points and measurement values to review. Height calibrates the estimates, so check its units before editing other values.

## 2. Correct the photo evidence

1. Inspect the **Front** and **Side** views.
2. Use **Adjust points** to drag misplaced dots to the intended body locations.
3. Adjust **Avatar outline** to compare the preview with the person in the photo.
4. Check regions where the arms overlap the torso. Replace an unsuitable photo, or enter measurements manually when its outline is unclear.

If detection fails, read the message and place points manually or use a clearer photo. The detected dots are a starting point, not proof that the body has been measured correctly.

## 3. Review the measurements

1. Inspect **Measurements** and open **Show all … measurements** for the additional values.
2. Check readings marked **Kept** or **Current avatar**. These have not been reliably estimated from the photograph.
3. Enter tape measurements where you have them. Keep **Keep left and right matched** enabled if paired values should change together.
4. Resolve any out-of-range warnings before applying. If you want to discard manual value edits in this dialog, use **Reset to photo values**.

## 4. Apply and save

1. Click **Apply to avatar**.
2. Inspect the body from front and side in the Costume viewport. Check the important dimensions in **Measurements**, **Circumferences**, and **Head**.
3. Use **Edit → Undo** if the applied pass is unsuitable. Reopen photo fitting to review it again.
4. Save with **Avatar → Save As**, then save the costume with **File → Save**.

**Result:** You have an estimated body refined with your own measurements. Loading an image with **Show reference image** alone does not run this fitting process.

If the application says the avatar changed during review, reopen photo fitting to refresh the baseline. For incomplete estimates, see [photo-fitting troubleshooting](/avatar/photo-fitting#if-the-estimate-is-incomplete).

Next, [import your first costume model](/getting-started/import-first-model).
