# Fit an avatar from photos

> Load front and side photos, calibrate height, review body points and measurements, and apply a first fitting pass.

Photo fitting provides a starting shape for a built-in avatar. It estimates dimensions from photos and your standing height. Verify those estimates with a tape measure before fitting final costume parts.

## Prepare the photos

* Take a front photo with the whole body, head to feet, in frame. Stand upright with arms slightly away from the torso and wear fitted clothing.
* Place the camera at chest height and keep it level. Avoid wide-angle distortion.
* Add a profile photo taken in the same pose, turned 90 degrees, to improve estimates of chest, waist, and hip depth.
* Record standing height without shoes. The photo dialog accepts centimetres or inches and scales its estimates from that height.

Photo fitting currently supports built-in avatars. Imported bodies can still use reference images for visual comparison.

## Add and analyze photos

1. Choose **Avatar → Edit Avatar**. On the Avatar 4 **Avatar** tab, find **Photo fitting** and click **Fit avatar from photos…**.
2. Under **Front photo**, click **Choose photo…** and open a JPG, JPEG, PNG, or WebP. The front photo is required.
3. Optionally choose a **Side photo**. Use a true profile rather than a second front view.
4. Enter **Standing height** and choose **cm** or **in**.
5. Click **Analyze photo**. Wait for the **Refine fit** stage, then review the front and side views.

## Review the fit before applying

1. Inspect the detected body points. Use **Adjust points** and drag misplaced dots to their intended body locations. Use the **Avatar outline** slider to compare the preview with the person.
2. Review **Measurements**. Lengths follow the dots; some girths need a side photo or manual input. A value marked **Kept** or **Current avatar** has not been reliably estimated from the photo.
3. Enter verified tape measurements in the value fields as needed. Use **Keep left and right matched** when you want paired values to change together.
4. Open **Show all … measurements** to review additional values. Resolve out-of-range warnings and check regions where arms touch the torso.
5. Click **Apply to avatar**, inspect the result in the Costume viewport, and save your avatar. Use **Cancel** to leave without applying the fitting pass.

The applied result is a circumference and shape approximation, not a certified body scan. Recheck head, chest, waist, and limb dimensions with the measurement guides. Applying photo fitting is undoable through **Edit → Undo**.

## Optional review tools

The **Adjust points** menu includes **Edit girth edges instead of body points**, **Mirror point edits left/right**, **Undo point edit**, **Redo point edit**, and **Reset points to detected**. These help correct the photo evidence before applying it.

Use **Reset to photo values** to discard manual measurement changes in the dialog. Use **Save printable tailor sheet (PDF)…** to record the photo/avatar values alongside tape measurements.

## If the estimate is incomplete

| Symptom | Next step |
| - | - |
| Girths keep their current values | Add a profile photo or enter tape measurements. Retake photos with arms away from the torso. |
| The side photo is reported as facing the camera | Replace it with a true profile. |
| Detection fails | Review the message and place the dots by hand, or use a clearer photo. |
| A value is outside the supported range | Check height, units, dot placement, and the entered measurement. |
| The avatar changed while you were reviewing | Reopen photo fitting to refresh the estimates against the current body. |
| The reference photo cannot be saved | Resolve the reported file-saving problem; the application leaves the avatar unchanged. |

Return to [body measurements](/avatar/body-measurements) to refine the result, then use [Fit Checker](/parts/fit-checker) on attached parts.
