# Body measurements

> Take consistent body measurements and use the avatar's length, circumference, and shape controls.

Measure the person who will wear the costume, then enter those values in **Avatar → Edit Avatar**. The highlighted guides on the avatar are your reference for each field's location and endpoints.

## Prepare your measurements

Use a flexible tape measure and ask someone to help with measurements you cannot see clearly. Wear the base layers and supportive undergarments you intend to use beneath the costume. Measure in a relaxed, upright stance.

For circumferences, keep the tape level and in contact with the body without compressing it. Breathe normally. Measure twice and repeat any reading that differs noticeably.

Set the unit display in [**Settings → Preferences**](/interface/preferences). Label the units in your notes. For example, **90 cm** and **35.4 in** describe approximately the same circumference; **90 in** describes a very different body.

<Tip>
Measure the body or its intended base layer first. Allow for armor thickness, padding, and movement when [fitting costume parts](/parts/attaching-parts), rather than adding an arbitrary amount to every avatar measurement.
</Tip>

## Enter a measurement

1. Choose the base **Gender** and set **Height Estimate** before fine-tuning.
2. Expand **Measurements** or **Circumferences**.
3. Hover over the field to highlight its guide in orange.
4. Identify the guide's endpoints or the height of its circumference ring.
5. Enter your value and press **Enter**. Check the value displayed after entry.
6. Inspect the avatar from more than one angle.

Sliders provide live adjustments. Numeric fields let you enter a measured value. Use the nearby **Reset** button to restore a field's default.

## Overall height

**Height Estimate** scales the entire avatar. Measure floor to crown and be consistent about whether footwear is included. Recheck the other dimensions if you change height after entering them.

## Compound lengths

| Field | What it controls | How to use it |
| - | - | - |
| **Torso Length** | The torso length shown by its guide. | Match the guide's endpoints on your body; use it before refining torso proportions. |
| **Arm Length** | The combined upper arm and forearm lengths. | Set the total, then refine **Elbow Length** and **Forearm Length**. |
| **Inseam** | The combined upper and lower leg lengths used by the avatar. | Match the guide, then refine **Knee Length** and **Lower Leg Length**. |

Changing **Arm Length** adjusts its component segments proportionally. **Inseam** similarly adjusts the leg segments. Set these totals first so you do not overwrite individual adjustments later.

## Individual lengths

The names identify the region, but the visible guide determines the measurement used by the editor. Do not substitute a sewing or clothing measurement with different endpoints.

| Field | What to check on the guide |
| - | - |
| **Neck Length** | The vertical neck segment. |
| **Shoulder Width** | The straight distance between the shoulder endpoints. |
| **Elbow Length** | The upper arm segment from shoulder toward elbow. |
| **Forearm Length** | The segment from elbow toward wrist. |
| **Knee Length** | The upper leg segment toward the knee. |
| **Lower Leg Length** | The segment from knee toward the ankle. |
| **Hand Length** | The span indicated across the hand region. |
| **Foot Length** | The heel-to-toe span indicated by the foot guide. |
| **Crown To Chin** | The vertical head measurement indicated by the guide. |

After changing a segment, check the joint position and total length. A correct total arm length can still have an elbow that sits too high or too low.

## Circumferences

Measure around the body at the level of each highlighted ring. A reading taken at a different height can differ even when the tape is level.

| Region | Fields | Measuring guidance |
| - | - | - |
| Head and neck | **Head Circumference**, **Neck Circumference**, **Neck Base Circumference** | Use the indicated levels. Keep neck base separate from the narrower neck reading. |
| Chest | **Chest Circumference**, **Underbust Circumference** | Match each ring's level. Underbust describes the ribcage beneath the breasts; it is separate from full bust and bra cup size. |
| Waist | **Waist Circumference** | Use the displayed waist level in a relaxed stance. |
| Hips | **High Hip Circumference**, **Low Hip Circumference** | Take readings at both corresponding levels. Check the guides before using one hip reading in both fields. |
| Upper leg | **Thigh Circumference** | Use the thigh level shown, without tightening the tape. |
| Knee and lower leg | **Knee Circumference**, **Calf Circumference**, **Ankle Circumference** | Use the displayed level for each region. |
| Upper arm | **Shoulder Circumference**, **Bicep Circumference** | Follow the shoulder and upper arm rings; shoulder width is a different measurement. |
| Lower arm | **Forearm Circumference**, **Wrist Circumference** | Measure around the indicated forearm and wrist levels. |

### Size and shape

**Size** changes the circumference setting. **Shape** changes the balance between side-to-side width and front-to-back depth. Use it when the number looks right but the body region is too broad or too deep.

Adjust shape in small steps and compare front and side views. The controls approximate a body cross-section; a circumference value alone cannot describe every contour of a real body.

### Chest, full bust, and underbust

Keep these readings separate in your notes:

* **Chest:** the level indicated by the editor's **Chest Circumference** guide.
* **Underbust:** around the ribcage beneath the breasts, at the underbust guide.
* **Full bust:** around the fullest breast area while wearing the intended supportive garment.

The editor does not currently provide a separate full-bust circumference input or a band-and-cup calculator. Use full bust as a reference when adjusting the [breast shape controls](/avatar/chest-and-breast-shape). Those controls change local geometry independently of the ribcage circumference settings.

## Keep a measurement record

Record the wearer, date, units, clothing setup, and readings together. Update the record when the intended base layers or the wearer's dimensions change.

Save a matching [avatar file](/avatar/saving-and-reusing-avatars) so you can return to that setup. If the numbers are plausible but the shape still looks wrong, see [Avatar troubleshooting](/avatar/avatar-troubleshooting).
