# Avatar troubleshooting

> Resolve unexpected proportions, chest shape, measurement entry, saved-avatar, and custom-model fitting problems.

Check the units, base body, and relevant guide before making another shape adjustment. Save a copy of an avatar that contains useful settings before resetting it.

## The avatar becomes much too large or small

Check the entered value and unit display in [**Preferences**](/interface/preferences). A number intended as centimetres describes a very different dimension if entered as inches.

For one incorrect length or circumference, use its **Reset** button and re-enter the measurement. Use **Avatar → Reset Avatar** to start the setup again, then choose the base body and set height before individual measurements.

If you cannot see the body, try **View → Zoom All**. If the viewport remains blank after restoring plausible values, save any recoverable work and restart. For a repeated problem, include the avatar file, units, entered value, and screenshot in a bug report.

## The numbers look right but the shape does not

Compare front and side views. Two bodies can share a circumference but differ in width and depth. Use the circumference's **Shape** control to refine that balance.

Check where you took the measurement. Upper and lower hip readings are different. For lengths, compare your endpoints with the highlighted guide.

Use local **Details** controls after the larger dimensions are correct. See [Body measurements](/avatar/body-measurements).

## The female chest looks too full or sits in the wrong place

Adjust **Breast Size**, **Breast Height**, and **Breast Projection** independently under **Details → Torso**. Start with size, then adjust height and forward projection.

Do not shrink a correctly measured ribcage solely to reduce breast fullness. [Chest and breast shape](/avatar/chest-and-breast-shape) explains the controls and how to use full-bust notes as a reference.

## An older avatar opens with breast sliders away from the midpoint

This is expected for an avatar saved with the older combined **Breast Size** slider. Armorsmith converts its size and position changes into independent settings to retain the saved shape.

Leave the converted values if you want that shape. Moving all three sliders to their midpoints returns the breast regions to the base mesh's original shape instead.

## Changing height alters other measurements

**Height Estimate** scales the avatar and its existing dimensions together. Set it first, then refine individual measurements. Recheck lengths and circumferences if you change it later.

## Changing arm length or inseam moves a joint

These compound measurements adjust their component segments proportionally. Set the total first, then refine upper/lower arm or leg measurements to place the elbow or knee correctly.

## Switching gender resets the setup

**Gender** changes the base body and resets its measurements and customizations. Choose it before fine-tuning. Use [separate avatar files](/avatar/saving-and-reusing-avatars) to retain more than one setup.

## A costume part no longer fits after an avatar change

Show the costume and inspect the part's position, orientation, and scale. A saved fit can need adjustment after changing the body, local details, or clothing setup.

Use [Fit Checker](/parts/fit-checker) to inspect body clearance and check neighboring parts directly. Adjust the part to the accurate body reference before generating final patterns.

## A custom avatar is the wrong size or does not pose

Check its height and orientation before attaching parts. Correct scale in the source application and reimport if needed.

For posing, verify a compatible skeleton. OBJ and STL meshes are static body references. For an unrigged model, position attachment points with **Edit Pose**. See [Custom avatars](/avatar/custom-avatars).

## Choose the right reset

| Reset | What to use it for |
| - | - |
| A field's **Reset** button | Restore one length or circumference to its default. Check related fields after resetting a compound length. |
| **Avatar → Reset Pose** | Discard pose edits while retaining the body setup. |
| **Avatar → Reset Avatar** | Restore measurements and appearance settings to defaults. Save a copy first. |

If the issue persists, include the application version, whether the avatar is built-in or custom, your steps, and a screenshot through **Help → Submit Bug**. Include the affected `.avatar` or custom model when it helps reproduce the problem.
